Hanuman’s Role in the Mahabharata: How He Helped the Pandavas Win

When we think of Hanuman, we often remember his bravery and devotion in the Ramayana. But did you know that Hanuman also played an important role in the Mahabharata? Yes! 1. Hanuman’s Meeting with Bhima – A Lesson in Humility

Bhima, the strongest of the Pandavas, was also the son of Vayu (the wind god), just like Hanuman. One day, while searching for a special flower (Saugandhika) in the forest, Bhima came across an old monkey lying in his path. The monkey politely asked Bhima to move his tail if he wished to pass.

Confident in his strength, Bhima tried to lift the tail, but no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t move it even an inch! Shocked and humbled, Bhima realized that the monkey was none other than Hanuman himself. Hanuman then blessed Bhima and reminded him that true strength comes with wisdom and humility.

2. Hanuman’s Blessing to Arjuna – The Power of Faith

Arjuna, the great warrior, once expressed doubt about Lord Rama’s ability to build a bridge of stones across the ocean to Lanka. To teach him a lesson, Hanuman disguised himself as a small monkey and challenged Arjuna to build a bridge of arrows that could bear his weight. When Arjuna’s bridge collapsed, Krishna appeared and revealed Hanuman’s true form.

Realizing his mistake, Arjuna sought Hanuman’s blessings. Pleased with Arjuna’s devotion, Hanuman promised to stay on his chariot’s flag (Kapidhwaja) during the war to protect him from harm.

3. Hanuman on Arjuna’s Chariot – The Shield of Protection

During the Kurukshetra War, Hanuman kept his promise by sitting atop Arjuna’s chariot in the form of a flag. His presence brought divine energy, fear among enemies, and ultimate protection.

It is said that whenever powerful weapons were aimed at Arjuna, Hanuman’s mighty roar would shake the battlefield, weakening the Kaurava army’s morale.

At the end of the war, Krishna asked Arjuna to step down first from the chariot. As soon as Krishna and Hanuman left, the chariot burned to ashes! Krishna then explained that Hanuman’s divine presence had been shielding it from destruction throughout the battle.
